The Real World Secret Weapon For a Smoking Hot Woman's Body Now - What Really Works

Secret Weapon? What is it? It can be summed up in one word. Kettlebells.

What are kettlebells?

A 'kettlebell' or girya (Russ.) is a traditional Russian cast iron weight that looks like a cannonball with a handle. Its simplicity and ease of use makes the kettlebell the ultimate tool for extreme total body fitness for women of all ages and body types.

Even for women?

Yes. The kettlebell is now becoming the favored ultimate fitness tool for busy women of all ages and fitness levels who are eager to get and stay strong, beautiful, toned, sleek, and radiantly young.

Yeah? How so?

Here are just a few of the documented Russian kettlebell benefits for women:

  • It blasts away the unwanted weight gains from pregnancy

  • Tones hips, thighs, and butt fast

  • Time commitment is minor--despite major results

  • You get stronger

  • Immune system strengthens and rebuilds itself

  • Creates better, more attractive posture

  • Rapidly builds incredible muscle tone and abs

  • Yet, will NOT bulk up a woman's body!

  • Nothing blasts cellulite faster

  • Heart rate dramatically improves

  • Full body workout, full range of motion

  • Finally something that "older" women can do

  • Huge confidence builder

  • Women in their 20s--even 90s--can do it

  • Blasts the fatigue that most women feel

  • Countless women have reported relieving fibromyalgia

  • Its efficiency as a timesaver is unrivaled.

  • Beginners to intermediate, anyone can benefit.

  • You can do it in the privacy of your own home.

  • Kettlebells save space in your home. No bulky equipment.

  • Kettlebells come in many different sizes, for each woman's individual needs

What if you like personal training and classes too?

More and more women are demanding classes and trainers for kettlebell fitness. There are a few reasons why women like classes:

  • Women tend to be more disciplined

  • Women like groups

  • Women stick to it better than men, especially with encouragement

  • Women are bored and tired of the endless fluffy fake fitness garbage out there, and will definitely stick to something that works. And they are finding that Russian kettlebells work.

Therefore, the premier Russian Kettlebell provider in the U.S., Dragon Door, has also answered this demand of the modern woman:

1. Many women often choose to become Russian Kettlebell Certified (RKC) because they feel better and look better than they ever have in their lives, and want that sense of accomplishment and encouragement that comes from the certification, and from meeting other women and men who used kettlebells to transform their bodies and quality of lives.

So now the time has come, you've been practicing Yoga for a while now and you feel ready to take on the responsibility of leading regular yoga instruction and help those who would like to regularly practice and take their efforts to the next level, plus increase their knowledge about many of the more detailed aspects of yoga and practice.

Obviously, during yoga teacher certification you progressively become more confident, you also pick up a little more about the philosophy of yoga and the science of the human anatomy and alignment issues that would not normally be covered during basic Yoga class.

Below I share 5 valuable tips to help you better prospects as a Yoga instructor.

1. You've got to get experience somewhere, so why not go and talk to some of the gyms in your local area that cater for Yoga classes, and not forgetting the workout studios and of course there is the YMCA/YWCA. Alternatively, you can find a community college and hold classes on your own. You can try out some churches, and there will be individuals who would require training in private class that would be held at time more suited to them and could either take place in their own home or possibly your own. (That's if you wanted to.)

2. Network with other local Yoga instructors and ask them how they got started, I'm sure they could provide valuable points that can lead you a useful direction.

3. You can expand on your experience by become an assistant trainer at your local gym, so for a time being you can assist and gain very valuable experience by just watching and DOING. I can't emphasize the last part enough. Its down to the 80/20 principle you'll learn 80% of your experience by gathering the training work that makes up the 20%.

4. If work as independent Yoga instructor is your goal then consider that you will have to put in long hours, sometimes including nights and weekends, are common, and employment is expected to be much faster than the average, and as Yoga is consider as health care your prospect are good, though do expect increase in competition as it is expected, but don't let this put you off, the best way forward is to be organized and disciplined and provide the very best service you can.

5. Consider the training environment as your schedules could have a work time setting generally about 40 to 50 hours per week-with nights and weekends off. You may spend part of your time in other locations such as community colleges, YMCA, or clients home or you own studio. So you may be out of outreach to other would be clients so its a good idea to keep your schedule varied.

In Summary

Medical Coding Certification Lets Coders Reap Special Benefits

Medical coding certification is not a requirement for a successful career as a medical coder. However, receiving certification from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) is a major lift for those looking to be part of the growing number of medical coding professionals. It is a big advantage in one's career, and it can make a big difference in the future.

The benefits of being an AAPC-credentialed medical coder are significant. According to a survey done by the AAPC, on average medical coders who have received certification from the AAPC tend to earn more. The salary difference of a credentialed coder to a non-credentialed coder, according to AAPC surveys, is up to 20% more. This equates to a significant boost in the earnings received for one's hard work.

Another benefit is that it is easier for coders who have been certified to find good jobs. Being certified signifies that a coder is one of the best and most competent in the business. The major hospitals and firms that require medical coders will no doubt have their eyes set on those who have performed exceptionally well in standardized examinations as well as the AAPC certification exams. Even if a coder is not one of the top examinees, merely being part of the AAPC roster is a sufficient sign of the skill and hard work that goes into a credentialed individual's jobs.

To prepare for medical coding certification exams, it is important that the prospective coder is part of a good training program. There are several medical coder schools that work to help get prospective coders ready for this big step forward. These schools can offer programs that are designed to help them understand medical categorization and the systems which doctors across the country use.

Even better, there are medical coder schools that allow hardworking professionals or stay-at-home parents to learn about being a medical coder without compromising their time. This is a particularly big advantage for single mothers, or housewives who are looking for a new venture by which they can earn their own money from. It allows these interested women to continue with their daily activities, such as caring for one's children or simply looking after one's own needs, without having given anything big up.

Resource Box:

Allied Medical School is one of the best medical coder schools in the United States. Allied is proud of its long history of producing graduates who do impressively well in medical coding certification exams. Learn more about the program online at MedicalCodingCourses.com.

The Famous Women of Alabama

Alabama is not only popular for its scenic attractions and landscapes. It is also home to a lot of famous women who not only excelled in their chosen fields but made significant changes in the world. Let us get to know some of them.

Helen Keller
Helen Keller was a famous American lecturer, author and activist. She was noted as the first deaf-blind person to ever graduate from College. She was born in Ivy Green Tuscumbia, Alabama to Kate Adams Keller. Her father was formerly the Confederate Army's officer, Captain Arthur Keller.

Though Helen was born in Alabama, the Keller Family originated from Germany.

Helen Keller was born neither deaf nor blind. She could hear and see clearly until she contracted a disease at age 19. The doctors referred to it as "an acute congestion of the stomach and the brain." Nowadays, it will be more known as meningitis or scarlet fever.

Helen's disease supposedly brings retardation and blindness. Although it did not last long, it left Helen blind and deaf. She survived through this phase through sign language.

It was Annie Sullivan, her teacher, who inspired her to communicate and become world renowned. Sullivan taught her to talk using a method called Tadoma.

Tadoma is touching the throat and lips of a person to understand what is being said. It also involves finger spelling the letter onto a child's palm. Later on, Helen learned the Braille method. She used it for reading English, French, Greek, German and Latin languages.

As an author, Helen Keller was outspoken and well-traveled, particularly opposing the threats of war. She became world renowned through her dramatic depiction of the film and play "The Miracle Worker." She campaigned and took a stand for the worker's rights, socialism, women's suffrage and various other progressive causes.

Courteney Cox
Courtney Cox is a famous American film producer, actress and model. She starred in popular films like Sitcom Friends, Scream Film Series and Dirt among others.

She belonged to a rich Southern family. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama to Courtney and Richard Lewis Cox.

Courtney Cox, or CeCe as her friends would call her, was raised within Mountain Brook Birmingham, Alabama to a rich suburb. This is where she studied and became a tennis player, swimmer and cheerleader.

Upon graduation, she pursued interior design and architecture at Mount Vernon College for Women. However, she dropped-out when Ford Modeling Agency convinced her to go to New York for a modeling career. In the midst of her modeling career, she also had acting lessons, working hard to improve her accent as well.

Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks is world renowned as an Afro-American civil rights activist. She was regarded as "The Mother of the Modern Day Civil Rights Movement."

She was born in Tuskegee, Alabama to a Leona Edwards and James McCauley, a teacher and carpenter respectively. Her family had Cherokee-Creek, Scots-Irish and African-American blood.
In her growing up years, discrimination was very rampant. There was the so-called Jim Crow Laws that segregated the blacks and the whites in virtually all aspects of daily living including public rides. Instead of providing separate vehicles for the blacks and the whites, train and bus companies just enforced strict seating arrangements. School buses were not available to the black students. While the whites conveniently rode school buses, blacks were forced to walk to school.

In Montgomery Alabama in December 1955, Rosa Parks disobeyed a bus driver named James Blake who was supposedly ordering her to make room and give up her seat for a white passenger. Although there have been other cases of civil disobedience, it was Rosa Park's action that sparked and triggered the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Her act of defiance brought about the Modern Civil Rights Movement, having her as their international icon of resistance to racial segregation. Later on, she collaborated and organized with other civil rights leaders, such as the likes of Martin Luther King Jr. She even helped launch his national prominence to the Civil Rights Movement.

Distance Learning Courses for Yoga Instructor Training

Is distance learning for Yoga instructors a new concept? No, distance learning for Yoga instructors has been around for decades. The concept of training to become a Yoga instructor, by distance learning, is much like working with any university via correspondence, but the efficiency of Yoga teacher training courses has improved with new technology.

Does Yoga teacher training online sound "tacky?" These days, the Internet has managed to become the "ultimate vehicle" for learning anything, including Yoga. It makes perfect sense for Yoga centers, and universities, to use the Internet for teacher / student contact.

Traditional on-site Yoga instructor training programs are much more computerized than they were ten years ago. Many on-site Yoga instructor trainers, and master Yoga teachers, maintain contact, with interns, by Email. This constant dialogue, from teacher to student, and vice versa, is very good for exchanging ideas. It also helps avoid common mistakes in communication.

With technology advancing at a rapid pace, the age of online Yoga teacher training is here. Yoga certification online is usually composed of assignments that can be sent by the intern, to the Yoga instructor school, via Email.

Even the Yoga certification videos, or practical exams, can be sent by interns with video streaming technology. Many Yoga instructor interns may still prefer to send their training assignments back, in the traditional way, by Postal Mail.

Is this the best Yoga certification program? The fact is many people cannot afford to leave their families, and employment, for weeks, or months, at a time. Many Yoga instructors outside of India are female, have children, work a full-time job, maintain a home, and some of these women are going to college at night.

With this in mind, the concept of a distance learning Yoga instructor's training course, developed for certification, is convenient and affordable. Truthfully, many interns do shop for an affordable certification, to become a teacher of Yoga.

A Yoga teacher certification, in Thailand, may be affordable, but what will the cost of a flight be? Just the cost of travel, by round trip flight, to Thailand or India, could be, "in the neighborhood" of, $3,000 USD, from North America. Compare that to a premium 200-hour, or more, Yoga instructor's training course and certification, for about $500 USD.

Now you can understand why Yoga instruction, Yoga certification, and Yoga teacher training, packed in a convenient home-study course, is so popular.

This is the 21st century, so Yoga music, Yoga products, Yoga exercise DVD's, and Yoga teacher certification courses, can be easily shipped to any part of the world.

Even, traditional Yoga meditation is being packaged into a certification course. Is this a good thing for Yoga? The demand for Yoga is global, and technology has found the answer - with Yoga instructor training courses and Yoga certification online.

Community Colleges - Great For Honing Skills

The local community college is a great place to do this. From classes about photography to courses on how to use clay molds, community colleges usually offer a wide and varied curriculum. What's more, the price is usually right, as community college is generally seen as a good value for those looking for a 2-year degree, an extra course to add to a skill set, or as a fun, structured way to learn something new.

One of the neat things about community colleges is there is such a diverse range of students. There are lots of recent high school grads either looking for an associate's or technical degree. Then there are the kids that took a year or two off to travel or work a little before going to college. You may find those from the working world taking night classes and studying alongside middle-aged women who never got a degree the first time around.

Finally you can find some elderly who want to learn how to use a computer or fire pottery in glass kilns. Taking a course can be wonderful for those in this age group, as they not only learn something, but have a valuable social outlet as well. It's a pretty neat thing to see a kid fresh out of high school working side-by-side with someone that could be their grandparent.

Of course, what a lot of students are shooting for is some sort of degree or certification in some sort of trade. These are the things that will really stand out to employers, or in some cases are necessary to simply get your foot in the door. It might be fun to take courses on how to use glass stringers, but getting a business degree or becoming certified in a programming language will probably be better for your job prospects. Of course, if you are looking to become an artist for a living, the reverse might be true! That's another great thing-there are all sorts of people looking to work in all sorts of fields. At your local community college, they all come together on one campus!

If you decide to take a pottery course at your local community college, you'll probably see things like clay molds and glass kilns. To find the best pottery and crafting supplies around, including glass stringers, your one stop is AMACO. Visit AMACO and browse through the vast product catalog to find just what you need!

Internationally Recognized Lean Six Sigma Certifications - For Organizations?

I just finished reading a great article called "Should ISO Initiatives Utilize Lean/Lean Six Sigma?" written by Larry Parah. He mentions that ISO doesn't really have "teeth" to grip onto Lean Six Sigma type improvements and make a difference. These are my thoughts regarding his article.

Business become ISO 9001 certified by customer demand.
These days I'm finding that many companies that could benefit from stronger improvement efforts are simply not trying. Why are they not trying? Because a customer isn't demanding that they try. This isn't statistically proven, but I feel that most companies seeking ISO 9001 certifications are doing so as a reaction to customer demand. They will lose business by not becoming certified or gain a specific customer by becoming certified.

ISO 9001 is sticky.
ISO 9001 certifications are mostly kept, once they are acquired. People don't want to look bad by losing their certification. Not only that but the certification process removes variability and is internationally recognized. That gives ISO 9001 stickiness.

Why improve when we can comply?
The next part of this idea is that businesses seem to be performing all the requirements for ISO 9001 once they are certified. At least they are performing these requirements once a year, for that internal audit. The big picture and goal of ISO 9001 is lost. It's not just to gain customers or satisfy customers ISO 9001 is to really reduce variability in business processes and make a platform for real improvements to be made. These improvements are supposed to bring down costs and improve quality. Business are missing the point of improvement.

Historically successful improvements efforts aren't sticking.
Improvement efforts like Lean Six Sigma are making big savings in resources and time while increasing product and process quality. But if it's so good why isn't it spreading like wildfire?! The best ideas aren't always the most successful ideas. The most successful ideas are the ones that spread and stick. Improvements with Lean Six Sigma aren't sticking and they aren't exactly spreading to everyone. Particularly small and medium sized businesses aren't accepting Lean Six Sigma.

Certify businesses not people.
This conclusion may be something simple like creating a certification for Lean Six Sigma or maybe improvement in general. Awards exist, conferences, societies and a bunch of other random stuff. Much of which appear to be sponsored by profiting organizations. Is it time to create an independent certifying body? Let's certify businesses not people.

By Sean M. Dozier

Re-capping Notes:
Business become ISO 9001 certified by customer demand.
ISO 9001 is sticking around because there is a certification process required.
ISO 9001 isn't very good at making improvements in businesses, they simply comply with the requirements as little as possible.
Improvement efforts like Lean Six Sigma make big improvements.
Improvement efforts like Lean Six Sigma are not sticking around.
Therefore, a certification process for Lean Six Sigma will be helpful. People are certified, why not certify companies?

EGL Diamond Certification

EGL Diamond Certification is done by the European Gemological Laboratory.

The price of diamonds is very much dependent on having a proper certification of that diamond.

A Certification is an assurance of quality. A diamond certification is a detailed diamond quality report issued by an accredited independent gemological laboratory. The most recognized gemological laboratories that provide certified diamond quality reports to the diamond and jewelry industry are listed below.

G.I.A. - Gemological Institute Of America

A.G.S. - American Gem Society

E.G.L. - European Gemological Laboratory

I.G.I. - International Gemological Institute

Certifications verses appraisals: It is vital to understand that appraisals are not the same as certifications and often not as accurate as a certified diamond quality report performed by an independent gemological laboratory. Such a report is based on a mechanical and technical examination of the diamond using verified test and electronic equipment . Appraisals are done individually by an appraiser and are only as accurate as the skill, knowledge and training of the appraiser.

A Certified Diamond Reports should provide the following information:

Shape

Measurements

Weight

Depth Percentage

Table Percentage

Girdle Thickness

Culet Size

Polish

Symmetry

Clarity Grade

Color Grade

Fluorescence

Comments about Diamond

Plot of Internal and External Inclusions

With the EGL certification, the EGL also issues a condensed report on a diamond known as a consultation. The difference between the consultation and the certification is that it does not have depth percentage, table percentage, polish and symmetry or fluorescence grades. And only documents the carat weight, color grade, clarity grade and plotting diagram. This is a quick short analysis useful when purchasing bulk diamonds.

EGL Certified Diamonds wholesale at as much as 20% less than similar clarity & color AGS or GIA certified Diamonds. This seems to indicate the diamond industry's perception that the EGL certification does not quote equal the same standards of accuracy and reliability as say, the AGS or GIA certifications. This price variation can be utilized to find a diamond price below its actual quality but, for the most part, an owner of a diamond will recognize the true characteristics and quality of the diamond and price it accordingly.

Permission to use this article is granted provided the link is included.

Price of Diamonds

Further information is available at http://priceofdiamonds.org, but EGL Diamond Certification is, for Europe at least, a necessary activity to determine the price of diamonds.

Medical Billing and Coding Certification - Making Yourself More Attractive to Employers

Medical billing and coding clerks or technicians typically need only a high school diploma in order to find employment. More and more employers however, prefer workers who have had some sort of formal training in this field. While a college degree is not a complete necessity, some may find it easier to find gainful employment with some college behind them. Those who possess an associate's or bachelor's degree will find it much easier to obtain job placement and may find that they will start out at a much higher salary rate than those who only have a high school diploma or on-the-job training.

In order to meet the requirements for certification, many students opt to take medical billing and coding classes through a variety of institutions. Online learning centers provide the coursework necessary to teach students the basics of this field as do other more traditional colleges and vocational schools.

Medical billing and coding schools are numerous and prepare students for the certification examination that must be passed in order to gain certain credentials. The American Academy of Professional Coders offers certification to those who successful pass a certification examination consisting of questions related to the correct application of CPT. A Certified Professional Coder or CPC must obtain at least two years of coding experience prior to examination and must maintain yearly renewal. The Certified Coding Association or CCA also offers credentials to those who meet requirements. Certified Coding Specialists or CCS must possess knowledge in the ICD-9-CM coding system and maintain knowledge of medical terminology, pharmacology and various disease processes.

The employment outlook for a career in this field is expected to grow over the next ten years. As more and more advances are made in the health care industry, the need for specialists to analyze and bill insurance companies will also advance. Many medical billing specialists opt for self-employment and build their own company around their skills and expertise. Medical billing is one of the most commonly found home-based businesses in the United States.

Earnings for medical billing and coding specialists may vary by location as well as employment organization. Most that have not completed certification begin their careers in the low $40,000 annually. Certification can help to greatly increase this number. Certification also offers more job security as employers typically search for those who have the right skills and professional qualifications to handle a job. Once experience has been gained, medical billing and coding certification in a particular specialty can also aid in job advancement and salary increase. Many medical coding specialists gain job advancement through management positions as well as those jobs that require a specialty expertise.

Those searching for a career with job security may find medical billing and coding a good choice. Personal skills for this career typically include the ability to work well with people and the ability to protect the private and confidential information of patients. Those searching for a job within the healthcare industry that does not deal directly with patient needs regarding treatment may find this the perfect career choice.

MidLife Women - How We Change in Midlife

"An increasingly insistent voice from deep within beckons us ...imploring us to explore aspects of ourselves that have been dormant during our years of caring for others and focusing on their needs." Dr. Christiane Northrup

There's definitely an up and a down side to getting older. For instance, who knew that perimenopausal symptoms, some of which, like poor co-ordination, seemed to oddly mimic early first pregnancy, could begin at age 43? I certainly wasn't ready for that and my mother, my friend and my Jin-shin-do practitioner had to tell me that what I was experiencing was perimenopause.

The initial stages of perimenopause seemed okay, but as the process deepened, my energy plummeted severely and I felt emotionally disconnected. As the hormone changes intensified, combining with my particular body biology and habits, I was quietly developing osteoporosis.

After I traversed perimenopause and became a menopausal crone, I began my counselling program at City University in Vancouver. My course started one month after I became menopausal, which I found interesting, and somehow fitting. My energy was more stable now, and the focus of learning skills to help me with my work with women gave my life meaning.

This new stage of my life also coincided with my aging mother, who was developing Alzheimer's by then, leaving her independent living situation and moving to our community, where my brother and I set her up in her own apartment with private caregivers for several hours per week. While I wasn't responsible for her day-to-day care, as my brother was her self-appointed case manager, the initial adjustment to having my mom 'in my backyard' so to speak, was pretty challenging. I was dealing with the stress of my first year in grad school (after about 20 years), and I was very stressed. Having my mother in my in my community meant that she was 'in my face', and old issues surfaced. Over the years it's been a chance to let go and grow for both of us however.

Despite the challenges midlife throws us, I've always seen this time as an opportunity to get to know oneself better. Something in us holds out an invitation to go down deeper into ourselves and to find out what it is that we yearn to do with the rest of our lives.

Personal Trainer Certification Opens the Door

After a few weeks of study and an initial small investment, an accredited personal trainer certification can be acquired which opens the door for developing a very sustainable business within the fitness industry. With the benefits of a flexible schedule, relatively minimal investment, and a secure career choice running a small business as a personal trainer is quite an attractive option to mix work and play.

Most trainers who work out of a health club are either independent contractors or employees. There are a variety of pros and cons to either approach. As a trainer with independent contractor status, you would enjoy benefits such as setting your own schedule, choosing where you want to work, charging variable fees depending on the situation, along with just the simple freedom to conduct business as you see fit.

Whether you work as an employee of a gym or as an independent contractor one of the critical legal components to understand is contract. Being aware of contractual obligations enable the personal trainer to perform his work, get paid for it, and avoid costly legal battles with clients and employers. The following basic elements are necessary for a binding contract:

* An offer and acceptance with a mutual agreement on terms
* Detailed description of the exchange (money for services)
* An acceptable legal format
* Ability of the parties to enter the contract legally (regarding age, mental capacity, etc)

All of these issues, and more need to be considered as the personal trainer develops his or her business and enlists clients.

Early in the professional life of the trainer the decision must be made whether to work out of a health club/fitness center or whether to act as an individual or part of a corporation. In conducting business independently from a fitness center or club, you have three types of business structures available: sole proprietorship, partnership, and corporation. Although there is more liability involved in a sole proprietorship it also gives one sole control over decisions and profits. A partnership may be an attractive option because it limits liability while providing many of the financial benefits of a sole proprietorship. In either case, this is an important decision to be made early in the trainer's career plan, similar to the decision of whether or not to pursue a real personal trainer certification.

Douglas Scott has been working on his personal trainer certification and writes articles to share his knowledge via the internet.

Why Do Women Hate Menopause?

Women fight or attempt to avoid perimenopause and menopause because our culture offers us no context from which to consider what is happening to us body, mind and soul. Our mothers' generation didn't really have a frame of reference for it either. But many years ago, some cultures honoured mid-life women as wise women. These women received and accepted the honourable name of 'Crone'.

Our society has progressed far with respect to the opportunities available to women. The roles of women and men aren't quite as clearly defined now. However, we live in a very productive society, and individuals and lifestyles who do not buy into this results-driven philosophy are held up for examination and even ridicule. So for the most part we emphasize the concrete rather than the abstract...the outer-directed physical instead of our inner emotional, psychological and spiritual life. The journey of menopause is misunderstood.

This journey is so much more than the cluster of physical symptoms addressed by many physicians and by most of the books I've come across. The physical changes are present of course, and are important to an extent. However, they are only the obvious manifestations of a profound internal metamorphosis.

Metamorphosis by definition is a change of form or structure; a transformation. We now know that women's "circuits", as Dr. Christiane Northrup calls them, are completely re-wired at this time, affecting every bodily system.

My answer to the question "Why do women hate menopause?" is that menopause is misunderstood by our society and often demeaned consequently. This demeans us as women so we try to avoid or ignore the whole menopause thing.

We all know youth is preferred to age in the western world. It is sold to us and marketed at us all the time. Menopause is interpreted as equivalent to aging, and something to be avoided at any cost. Just as some gays apparently have internalized homophobia, most women have internalized ageism, and/or menopause-phobia. It's only natural, as we are products of the culture we live in.

I know it's challenging, but let's not buy into this "party line". Let's step up and be exactly who we are, warts and all. Let's live the best life we can. And if society doesn't like it, it can lump it!

8a Certification Financial Statements - What Are the Requirements and How Does the SBA Review Them?

8a Certification - Your firm's financial statements?

What is required to be submitted?

All firms applying for 8a Certification must submit the following:

a. A copy of the firm's current year to date balance sheet and income statement. The date of these statements cannot be any older than 90 days old when submitted to the SBA. We suggest that you provide the latest date as possible.

b. If the firm's financials are prepared on an accrual basis and the current year to date balance sheet exhibits accounts payable or accounts receivable you must provide corresponding aging statements. If the firm's financials are prepared on a cash basis, an accounts payable or accounts receivable aging statement is not required to be provided.

c. A copy of the firm's last three completed year end balance sheets and income statements or as many as they have been in business, if less than 3 years.

What basis (Cash or Accrual) should the firm's financial statements be submitted on?

I suggest that you submit the balance sheet and income statements on the same basis as you filed your firm's federal income tax returns on. If you prefer to provide your financials on a different basis than what your federal income tax returns are filed, be prepared to be support any significant increase or decrease by backup documentation should the SBA request it.

Is it ok to use the tax returns as the financial statements?

No, you must provide a balance sheet and income statement prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles or on an accepted cash basis. If you use QuickBooks, we suggest using the standard report as the copy to be submitted.

What minimum requirements must the current year to date balance sheet and income statement exhibit to meet the basic 8a eligibility requirements?

The current year to date financials must exhibit positive net income, positive total equity and positive working capital at a minimum.

What exactly does the SBA look for when they review and screen the current year to date financial statements?

a. Is the current year to date balance sheet and income statement no older than 90 days from date of receipt?

b. Have the balance sheets and income statements been prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles or an accepted cash basis?

c. If the firm's financials are prepared on an accrual basis, are the aging schedules for accounts payable and receivable consistent with the current year to date balance sheet provided?

d. Are there any accounts payable or receivable that are over 90 days old? If so, the SBA may discount these amounts and it could possibly reflect negatively on your firms potential for success criteria.

e. Does the firm have fixed assets? If so, are these fixed assets recorded properly? Are the fixed assets reported with depreciation or at actual value?

f. Do the firm's fixed assets correspond with its type of business? For example, if the firm performs construction work does it have construction equipment? If you are a general contractor and your balance sheet exhibits no fixed assets (hammers, drills, construction equipment, etc.) your income statement should show leasing costs associated with the rental of equipment needed to perform its projects.

g. If the firm is a dealer, wholesaler, or supplier, does the firm maintain any inventory and is it shown on its balance sheets?

h. Are there loans or notes receivable from a shareholder, officer or partner listed on the balance sheet? If so, has a copy of the loan or promissory note been provided within the application paperwork? If the loan is from one of the applicants, has it been properly reflected on their SBA 413 form, personal financial statement?

i. Does the firm have the ability to service debts? (e.g. minimum of 90 days worth of working capital)

j. Are there any loans that are questionable or that may raise concerns regarding control? Does the firm have financing by non-disadvantaged individual(s) that would be considered critical financing? Also, is the loan payable upon demand? Do these loans reflect generally accepted repayment terms? If not, is this item over-inflating the firm's assets?

k. Do the retained earnings reported reconcile with previous financial statements?

l. Does the listed business equity match that reported on the applicant's SBA 413 Form, personal financial statement?

m. Does the profit and loss statement show revenues in the appropriate business activity (NAICS)?

n. Is "Cost of Goods Sold" included?

o. Are the line items recorded on the balance sheet and income statements consistent from year to year?

p. Does the income statement show an expense for employee salaries? Does it appear that the applicant is not the highest compensated? Are there indications that excessive withdrawals have occurred?

q. Does the income statement show an expense for insurance and if required, an expense for worker's compensation?

r. Are there any large subcontracting expenses that appear questionable? A services related firm should not subcontract out more than 50% of the loaded labor portion of a contract. If you are a construction firm this percentage is 85% and 75% for construction trade (plumbing, electrical, etc.)

What exactly does the SBA look for when they review and screen your previous year end financial statements?

a. Are the year end balance sheet and income statements provided from the beginning of the calendar or fiscal year to their fiscal year ending date?

b. Does the revenue reported on income statements appear to be in the same in the same line of business from year to year?

c. What pattern are the revenues, profits, and losses showing? Is there a need to ask for clarification, such as an explanation of the reason for a downward trend or sudden revenue drop?

d. Are there any discrepancies between the firm's tax returns and the financial statements? Are these discrepancies based on cash versus accrual? If not, is reconciliation required? Does taking into consideration cash versus accrual reconcile the accounts?

e. Do the balance sheets correspond with the tax return schedules? For example, are there shareholder loans on the tax return schedules that are not reflected on the financial statements?

f. Do the financial statements and corresponding tax returns reflect any conversions from accrual to cash accounting?

The Diamond Certification Dilemma

AGS, EGL, GIA, or IGI? Does it impact price?

The debate over diamond certification and grading is not new, but the increasing growth of Internet diamond jewelry sales has fired up this debate and brought it to the consumer's doorstep. Diamond jewelry shoppers are overwhelmed by information, some accurate, some not, but mostly confusing.

The purpose of this article is not to settle the debate, but merely to provide a real world perspective for what I've seen evolve over the last decade from within the industry of diamond dealers, to the street for the diamond shopper.

Ten years ago buying a diamond or diamond jewelry was a magical experience requiring the consultation of an expert. Diamonds were bought and cherished. Today it is a dog-eat-dog Internet world, where diamond dealers are "perceived" not to be trusted and consumers are educated to the point of commoditizing something that was once precious and rare.

The allure is gone, trusted expertise dwindling, and the debate over diamond value rages on. In my opinion, this is not a good thing or a bad thing; it is just the result of an evolving industry. Just as in any industry there is a continuum of change and control, with the sellers at one end and the buyers at the other. Sometimes the change goes too far in one direction or the other, but over time control comes back to balance because of basic economics. The diamond industry is in the middle of this change.

The diamond certification is one way diamond dealers are differentiating their product. With so much information available on diamond education, the consumer has become a self-proclaimed expert and is in search of the perfect diamond at the cheapest price. When making an investment in a fine quality diamond it should be certified by an accredited independent gemological laboratory and of course purchased from a reputable dealer. The most popular certifications being discussed today are:

- GIA - Gemological Institute Of America (founded 1931)

- AGS - American Gem Society (founded in 1934)

- EGL - European Gemological Laboratory (founded 1974)

- EGL USA (EGL USA is not affiliated with any other EGL labs outside North America. Founded 1977)

- IGI - International Gemological Institute (founded 1975)

Let me address the most common consumer questions about certification:

1. Are all certifications created equal?

Based solely on reputation, not all certifications are created equal. This is fact in the diamond industry, there are biases in the marketplace and this also varies by what country you are in.

In the United States, GIA and AGS, are the market leaders, the most trusted sources. For that reason a diamond graded by either one of these institutions will be more expensive than like diamonds graded by their competitors, period. Conversely, expect a discount for EGL and IGI graded diamonds.

The debate is not purely about reputation, but about standards of quality. No matter how you look at it a diamond is still graded by a human and open to subjectivity. Therefore, the more standardized the tools and strict the process the more consistent the results. GIA and AGS founded the standards and have refined them over the last 75 years. This is why comparing two like diamonds with the same grade for color, clarity and cut, the EGL and/or IGI diamonds will be cheaper. It is assumed it's off by at least one grade, e.g., graded F color by EGL may be grade G or H by GIA. It's a common assumption in the industry that IGI and EGL diamond grades are softer than GIA and AGS.

For now the consumer just needs to understand that these biases exist in the marketplace and drive pricing. An important factor driving the increase of EGL and IGI certified diamonds into the market is the commoditization I mentioned earlier, when diamond grades are easier to get it increases the margin for the dealer.

2. Will my diamond be more valuable with a certification?

A diamond is not more valuable with a certification per se. A diamond can be sent to any grading lab and receive a certification at any time (note it should be un-mounted). The initial value of the certification is two fold, first it gives the credibility at time of purchase that it has been independently graded. Secondly, if you ever want to sell or trade your diamond, the certification will make this process easier.

3. How do I know the certification is for the same diamond?

This is a trickier question, and why a diamond shopper still needs trusted sources and experts. A diamond certification provides detailed criteria about the diamond, including specific measurement data. One way to know for a fact the certification goes with the diamond is the measurements, this requires specialized diamond measuring tools. If you need to verify a certification/diamond combination I suggest taking it to an independent jeweler who can provide you with a Sarin Report, a high-tech automated cut grade and diamond measuring device.

Another way a professional can verify your diamond and certification is by clarity grading. A diamond's clarity is akin to fingerprints, no two diamonds are alike. A professional jeweler can tell you the exact location of the clarity birthmarks, feathers, inclusions, etc. and verify the certification.

4. Should all diamonds be certified regardless of size?

I frequently get questions about whether or not all the diamonds in the ring are certified. It is not necessary or recommended to certify multiple small diamonds in a ring. Certification is reserved for larger center stone diamonds, .75ct and greater. While you can get all the diamonds certified, it doesn't add any value and it's expensive.

As a diamond shopper your choices are endless, what's important to take away from this article is the understanding that certification is not a guarantee of value, but merely one more decision that impacts price. A diamond shopper will need to make this decision along with color, clarity, cut, and carat, in your search for the perfect diamond at the best price.

Six Sigma Methodology Training And Certification

Six sigma methodology is one of the most popular business management strategies in recent years. This methodology requires that the management defines six quality states that are on the plus or minus side of average quality. The quality of a product is based on the materials, instruments used and the methods involved in the production process, and the technical skills of the manpower involved. Improvements in one or all of the above areas can improve quality. By sticking to a standard process and applying six sigma methodologies, deviations in quality standards can be avoided.

Six sigma training aims at training the management and personnel on six sigma methodology so that it can be successfully implemented in the production process. Creating pivotal roles in accordance with six sigma implementation is it's another goal.

These Crucial Roles Are Mentioned Below:

* Executive leaders, who occupy managerial positions, are responsible for creating specific strategies based on the nature of business needs. They find out the areas that need improvement and make tactics to address these improvement areas.
* Champions: these staff members undergo six sigma training and are selected by the executive leaders. They belong to the supervisory section of the organization. They need to implement the vision of progress created by executive leaders.
* The master black belts are the six sigma experts who make the rest of the staff understand the guidelines set by the upper management and supervise the black belts.
* Black belts are the action staffs who spearhead the six sigma guideline adaptation process by helping its implementation. They check progress at every step and put the right people for the job.
* Green belts and yellow belts undergo six sigma training by the black belts and work under their supervision.

A business management strategy like six sigma can boost the organizations profitability by multifold. This is because six sigma improves the performance and production; it optimizes the results and minimizes the cost. This results in major cost savings in terms of manpower, wasted material, substandard quality, and returns or reworks. Consequently, it results in significant growth in bottom line.

In order to implement six sigma methodologies, the company needs to identify executive leaders with clear visions. They should train their employees to become champions, master black belts, black belts, green belts, and yellow belts.

If an individual wants to become a six sigma expert out of own interest, the cost of six sigma training is only a fraction of the academic certifications. One can get trained in six sigma methodologies and accept challenging and superior career roles in various industries.

One can take up six sigma training during the evening hours or can take up online courses at a schedule suitable to their routine. One can learn management of inventory, production capacity and scheduling, organizing the business processes, and managing machinery and workspace. The six sigma concepts have become very popular in recent days due to the vast improvement it brings about. Especially in these modern days when competition is stiff, superior quality and cost-cutting measures are a must for a company to survive. Six sigma training aims at equipping the organization and individuals with the best processes and methods that can ensure continued growth and profitability.

Six Sigma training provides training on processes and methods recommended by six sigma methodology. This training can be availed by organizations for their employees or by individuals. For more information and resources, visit http://www.sixsigmatrainingguide.com.

Why Successful Women Are Starting Their Own Virtual Assistant Businesses

Virtual Assistants (VA) are very often savvy women and men who use their highly developed skills, training, and experience to assist other businesses virtually. Smart business people wishing to reduce business costs and make better use of their own time are hiring these new entrepreneurs and utilizing their professional expertise. By taking advantage of modern technology VA's perform many tasks using the internet and email, fax, telephone and courier services all from their own home offices.

Just what services can you provide as a VA?

Actually the list of what VA's can't provide is much shorter than what they can do for their clients. One very successful VA boasts that she can't make her clients coffee but can arrange to have it delivered to them every morning. Nothing is impossible. Many take care of their client's daily administrative needs such as correspondence, email management, answering inbound phone calls, book keeping and client follow-up. The list is endless ~ it just takes a little imagination and creativity. There are VA's who design web sites, logos, stationery, forms, newsletters and power point presentations. Remember all of this is done from the comfort of their home office. Each has their own unique capabilities and talents and depending upon how they market themselves is how successful they will be.

What does it take to become a Virtual Assistant?

A few of the suggested skills and experience from a potentially unlimited list are:

- Highly skilled in computers
- Secretarial or administrative experience
- Legal or paralegal experience
- Medical background
- Real estate knowledge or experience
- Bookkeeping knowledge and experience
- Insurance background
- A strong work ethic along with excellent customer service skills
- A strong attention to detail

It really doesn't matter what your background. By using your skills and knowledge to assist your clients with their businesses you can develop your own special niche as a Virtual Assistant.

The client list is just as long as the list of those who are qualified to become Virtual Assistants. Clients can be found anywhere! A short list of potential VA clients is only limited by the imagination:

- Realtors
- Lawyers

The Lowell Mill Girls: Sarah Bagley

In a previous article, "The Lowell Mill Girls," I wrote about the girls who worked in the textile mills of Lowell, Massachusetts, in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. One of those girls was Sarah Bagley, though she was hardly a girl when she came to Lowell to work in 1836 at the age of thirty.

Most of her coworkers were between the ages of fifteen and thirty. They lived in company-owned boardinghouses, where they slept six to a room, two to a bed. Privacy was nonexistent. Their room and board was deducted from their pay.

Working at the mills was a blessing and a curse. The conditions were poor, the physical demands grueling, the hours unending, but the wages were the highest ever paid to a female worker in this country.

A short description of a typical day of work will demonstrate what Sarah encountered when she arrived in Lowell:

4:30 a.m. Wake up call

5:00 a.m. Work began

7:00 a.m. Breakfast

7:30 a.m. Back to work

12:30 p.m. Dinner

1:00 p.m. Work resumed

7:00 p.m. Workday ended

10:00 p.m. Lights out

Sarah managed to find the time and energy to study writing at a nearby Universalist church, and began writing articles for the "Lowell Offering," a paper that was controlled by the mills. During her first years there, her writings were very complimentary toward her employers, but her attitude changed after working there a few years.

Sarah went home to New Hampshire for six weeks every the summer. Still, after three years, her health began to be affected. Most of the women had digestive problems because they were only allowed only a half-hour to eat, during which time they had to travel back and forth to the boarding house.

Between 1842 and 1844, an economic depression caused hundreds of textile workers to leave Lowell, because of wage cuts. By the spring of 1844, the economy had improved, and the textile companies raised the wages of the male overseers, but not for the female workers, who comprised over 80% of the workforce.

In December 1844, Sarah and five other women formed the Lowell Female Labor Reform Association (LFLRA) to protest poor working conditions and 13-hour workdays. Sarah worked tirelessly for the union and served as the group's first president, and it quickly grew to over five hundred members. She spoke out in public, something women didn't do back then. It was considered unfeminine.

She organized a petition drive that urged the Massachusetts state government to investigate conditions in the mills. Sarah fearlessly testified in legislative hearings, but was told that the issues she was protesting must be worked out between the textile corporations and their workers. She continued to petition the legislature, but the authorities declined to take action.

Sarah was able to gain the support of the members of the New England Workingmen's Association (NEWA), though most men of that time were threatened by women entering the workplace. They also believed in the old adage, "A woman's place is in the home."

The NEWA published a paper called the "Voice of Industry," in which the two unions protested the conditions in the factories, and begged for a ten-hour workday. Sarah became the editor of the paper. The political pressure brought to bear on the textile companies finally caused them to shorten the workday by thirty minutes in 1847.

Sarah had been working at the mill for eleven years. She was frustrated and angry, and began to look for another job. The new technology of sending messages by wire came to Lowell. Sarah was hired as the first female telegrapher in the U. S. Later, she was sent to Springfield, Massachusetts, to run the telegraph office there, and was very upset to learn that she was making one-third less than the man she replaced.

A year later, she went back to work for the mills. This time, she lived with her brother and was able to save a nice sum of money. She traveled across New England, and began to write about women's rights, healthcare, and prison reform. In 1849, she worked with the Quakers in Philadelphia to establish a shelter for prostitutes and impoverished young women. She also met and married James Durno in 1850.

The following year, the newlyweds moved to Albany, New York, and began practicing homeopathic medicine. This was a new field that used herbs and plants to heal the body, rather than the more invasive medical procedures used at the time, such as bleeding the patient and purging the body through vomiting. They specialized in the care of women and children, providing their services free when necessary.

James began to manufacture herbal medicines and snuff. In 1867, they moved their factory to New York City, where they lived out their lives in a large house in Brooklyn Heights.

Sarah is one of a large number of women who lived in the mid-nineteenth century, and who made a commitment to improve the quality of life for all disadvantaged and enslaved people.

They are my heroes.

Yoga Instructor Certification - How To Become A Certified Yoga Instructor At Home

In recent times yoga instructor certification has become more important than ever. In the past registration was usually enough because the practice and teaching of yoga was not as mainstream as it is today. However nowadays not being certified puts a yoga teacher at serious risk of costly lawsuits and unable to obtain liability insurance at all.

The Major Reason For Certification

The major reason for becoming certified is for a teacher's legal protection. There has unfortunately been an increase in lawsuits against teachers as a result of student injuries that usually could have been avoided with proper training and instruction.

While one's first impression of yoga is that it is a relaxing, spiritual exercise it can actually be quite vigorous, especially for people who are just starting out or seniors.

Why Injuries Usually Occur

Unfortunately if students have not stretched adequately enough before the lesson or have done a move incorrectly inadvertent injury may occur.

How being certified will help you is that it will be a lot easier for you to obtain liability insurance. Liability insurance is not something that should ever be overlooked, no matter how experienced you think you may be or how safe and gentle you believe your class is.

Get To Know Every Student

A student questionnaire is highly recommended because it is essential as their teacher that you understand every student's overall health, medical conditions, fitness level and general history.

Teachers who have been teaching for an extended period of time may not have had any kind of certification available to them. That's why it's essential even the most seasoned trainers ensure that their are covered.

On a positive note, if you are a professional teacher you may be able to receive some sort of credit or recognition for your past experience and your training already undertaken.

The Minimum Certification Requirement

There is a minimum requirement and that's 200 hours of study. What must be included in any course you undertake is virtually every facet of running a yoga business including anatomy, physiology, safety, modifications and contraindications.

Additional Benefits

You will find it easier to obtain work if you are certified. In fact, some studios for their own protection consider it a hiring requirement.

Diamond - History of the Most Popular Precious Stone

We all know the saying "diamonds are a woman's best friend". This saying is without a doubt based on a true fact: women tend to be fascinated by this gemstone and the jewelry containing it. It is that fascination for the precious stone that made the diamond industry what it is: a strong industry which is time proof and immune to economic crisis.

This article is not about that fascination and trying to explain its reasons. This article is about the history of diamonds and the diamond industry in a nutshell.

A diamond is a mineral primarily made of carbon. Diamonds are the hardest mineral in nature and the most brilliant of all minerals.

The first diamonds are said to have been discovered in India in the ninth century BC. They were associated with divinity and were then primarily used as a talisman to protect the warrior engaged in a battle. Diamonds where later found in Borneo in the 7th century and in Brazil in the 18th century but in insignificant size.

A significant source of diamonds was discovered in 1866 in South Africa. Diamond mines were then created in the Southern and central regions of the African continent.

The famous De Beers mining company took control of most of these mines and eventually formed the central selling organization that controls much of the world's trade in diamonds till this day.

During the 20th century the diamond industry was plagued by the "blood diamonds" phenomenon:

Diamonds mined in a war zone and sold to finance insurgency or a warlord's activity.

The year 2003 brought the establishment of the Kimberley process certification scheme which is designed to certify that stones sources are free of conflict fueled by diamond production.

Best Home Based Business for Women

Women everywhere are looking for a home based business that will enable them to spend quality time raising their children, but also bring in extra income. Many times they will try direct sales such as Avon or Mary Kay but although there are a few that make a good income this way, the majority won't be able to make a career out of it.

What if there was a home based business for women that could do it all:

  • Offer Quality Family Time

  • Bring in a very good income

  • Give the kids a built in job as they're growing older

  • AND....be FUN!

Well, the Party Rental Business offers all this and more. And more and more women are starting their own companies each and every day.

Start up can be fairly easy. You need a couple of moonbounces, a vehicle, a phone number, insurance and standard business start up tools. And since most people already have a vehicle, we're talking a very low start up cost.

Moonbounces used to be around $3500.00 each, but due to the heavier manufacturing that came about a year or so ago, you can get a moonbounce for less than $1000.00.

Advertising is simple...set it up and let your kids and their friends play....and you'll be well on your way to a successful business.

But, the moonbounces rent from $85.00 to $250.00 per day (depending on the part of country where you live), so your units pay for themselves with just a few rentals. And moonbounces are just the beginning!

Although you'll probably just want a couple of pieces while you have toddlers, as the kids grow...your business can grow as well.

You can add "fun foods" like snow cones & cotton candy, water slides, interactive inflatable games, obstacle courses, carnival games and more. You can branch out from back yard birthday parties and start doing church events, festivals, school & college events and corporate picnics.

The best part about the party rental business is that you'll grow as big as you want. And as your kids grow, they'll be able to help you with your rentals. Not to mention, they may want to expand the business themselves. Many teens have great ideas about new ways to grow the business.

So, when you're looking for a home based business opportunity that will grow with your family, party rentals is the way to go!

Bible Submission Between Christian Man and Woman Within the Church

Do Christian husbands ever submit to their wives? Do wives have authority over their husbands to tell them what to do? Are husbands to obey their wives or are wives to obey their husbands in everything? What really is the truth according to the Holy Scriptures, which is the very Word of God?

What does this Bible passage mean?

Ephesians 5:21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.

Eph. 5:22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

Eph. 5:23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.

Eph. 5:24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.

Eph. 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her. Let us examine each verse circumspectly.

Many people believe that Ephesians 5:21 is teaching mutual submission. They believe that men and husbands are to obey their wives and vice versa. The truth of the matter is that Ephesians 5:21 is an introductory statement like a newspaper headline. You must read the entire article or in this case the entire passage in order to understand who submits to whom.

This verse was not meant to stand-alone, it requires the other verses in order to have true meaning. If this verse were meant to stand-alone then we would have no need of the remaining scriptures in the context. Ephesians 5:22 through Ephesians 6:9 gives us four different kinds of submission and this gives us the explanation of Ephesians 5:21.

Ephesians 5:22 states that wives are to submit to their husbands, this is the first kind of submission. Ephesians 5:25 says that husbands are to be submissive to the Lord Jesus Christ and this is the second kind of submission. Ephesians 6:1 is telling us that children are to obey their parents and this is the third kind of submission. Ephesians 6:5 states that employees are to obey their employers and this is the fourth kind of submission. You will never find any where in the Bible where it says that men or husbands are to obey their wives or another woman.

When you read the book of Genesis in the first chapter you will find that God created man saying that He created them male and female. It is necessary to read the second chapter of Genesis in order to get the details of creation. If you only read the first chapter of Genesis then you will believe that man and woman were created at the same time. Reading the second chapter of Genesis tells us that man and woman were created at different times. This illustration is similar to reading Ephesians 5:21 where you will need to read the entire passage in order to know who submits to whom.

Ephesians 5:24 gives us conclusive evidence of the fact that husbands do not ever submit to their wives. Wives are to obey their husbands in Everything just like the church is to obey Christ. This parallel of comparing the church like the wife being submissive to the husband and Christ couldn't be any clearer. Let me ask you, does Christ ever submit to the church? Is Christ beneath the church in authority? Christ never submits to the church, therefore the husband never submits to the wife. The church is always under Christ and obeys His every word. In like manner wives are to obey every word of their husbands.

HUBZone Certification - What You Need to Know Before You Begin

HUBZone Certification

Getting your business HUBZone certified can help insure your businesses success. The HUBZone certification is available for startup businesses, however the firm will need at least one employee in order to satisfy requirement #3 below.

What are the criteria for HUBZone Certification?
1. 51% ownership by a US Citizen.
2. The Principle Office of the firm must be located within a HUBZone
3. At least 35% of the employees must live within a HUBZone
4. The firm must be classified by the SBA as a small business. (Small business size determinations separated into primary NAICS Code)

In submitting the initial application to the SBA no verification for any of the following information will be required. The SBA will follow up with the firm 90 days later and ask for follow up information regarding, how the firm is owned, a map showing the primary business location, utility bills showing the firm name in the HUBZone location, drivers licenses showing primary residence of firm employees, as well as other supporting documentation. Make sure you have made these determinations prior to submitting your firm's application.

There are other issues and considerations for firms moving into a HUBZone location. Your CCR Registration is the electronic platform for you HUBZone application. Therefore all information contained in the CCR Registration must accurately reflect the information within the HUBZone application or there will be a conflict created which could cause a denial. Another factor of consideration is that the D&B information on your business links directly into the CCR Registration so this information must be updated to reflect a firm having moved into a HUBZone with the new Principle Office.

The benefits to your business are the following:

1. 10% pricing preference on government contracts. The HUBZone firm is considered to have similar pricing to a non-HUBZone firm if the HUBZone firm is charging $110 and the non-HUBZone firm is charging $100.
2. Large Companies bidding on Federal Contracts are required to show how they are including HUBZone companies as part of the contracts that are greater than $550,000.
3. The SBA has programs set up to help HUBZone firms with additional Bonding for Construction firms as well as aid in special SBA financial loans and resources.
There are also other intricacies to the HUBZone process such as if a county in a state has greater than 140% of the unemployment rate for the rest of the state then the county is considered to be HUBZone and all firms in that country can apply for HUBZone status. If a business is located as part of an Indian Reservation the firm can have less than 35% of the worker living in a HUBZone until such time as the firm is going to perform on a government contract and at that time the firm needs to become compliant with the 35% residence rule.

Martial Arts Schools For Law Enforcement Officers

Law enforcement officers have no time to waste with useless techniques in their martial arts training. What they need is something that works and the conditioning and stamina to execute these techniques in a high intensity confrontation.

I once enrolled a new student who possessed the characteristics of the ideal student: polite, respectful and willing to learn. She told me that she was a police officer who was looking to polish her defensive skills. She had abandoned her membership in a competitor's school because the classes lacked any practical application. Nothing that was being taught was of any use on the streets. The system was chock full of flashy jumping and spinning kicks, which are perfect for the movies, but disastrous for self-defense.

It is the obligation of a marital arts instructor to prepare not only police officers, but also the general public, for such unhealthy or life-threatening confrontations. Unfortunately, some martial artists are making a lot of money marketing a lot of empty promises.

I had a new student who decided to spend $2,500 on a 4-hour seminar in California that promised a lot of fancy fighting techniques and a certificate of completion. When he returned, I was curious to see what $2,500 could buy in 4 hours. I asked him to show us. In order to do this, I had to find him an opponent.

I looked around and decided to pair him up with an 18-year-old woman who had been training real life self defense techniques for only one month. The only rule I set to this match was that she was to use simple logical techniques to keep her safe and he was to use what he learned at the seminar. It took all but 30 seconds for this young lady to bring him to his knees. So much for the seminar!

I've seen students with world-class martial arts credentials, by this I mean lots of titles, trophies, and medals. One gentleman said that he was the best and he only trained with the best. He boasted about paying his last instructor $18,000 for one year.

One day the class was doing a lot of two-person drills. The "best of the best" gentleman was paired up with a heavy student who could throw a decent roundhouse kick to the leg. It took this student two shots to the leg to hurt this world-class champion. He was too embarrassed to come back after this episode. It was obvious that the $18,000 he spent wouldn't help him if he was a police officer.

To many of the police officers we have worked with training is not about belts, trophies, or flashy techniques; it is about survival. When choosing a martial art school, choose the practical path. Ask yourself, "Are they teaching me something that could one day save my life?" If you haven't had enough experience to know the difference, find someone who has and bring them with you before you sign a contract and turn over your money. Especially if you're in law enforcement and your life depends on your training everyday.
